Nestled at the base of the Snowy Mountains in the heart of Montana, lies Snowy Mountain Angus. Theresa Abegglen and her mom, Patti Lemmon, own and operate this small family-run ranch. Being the third generation on the ranch, Theresa knows and understands the land and the cattle of this operation. Sadly, Theresa lost her youngest son Dallas in 2020 to an accident on the ranch, but his memory lives on in the hearts of everyone who knew and loved him. He remains a part of the ranch and the herd. With a herd bull hailing from one of his cows, and a reference cow that has earned Pathfinder status, Dallas is still leaving his mark on our operation. Theresa’s son, Preston, also helps out on the ranch whenever he can.

Since most of the work is done by a very small crew of women, you’ll notice that our cattle are very quiet and easy to work around. We are not aggressive when working our cattle, and this temperament carries on to the bulls we sell. We strive to produce animals that perform, and sound maternal genetics form the basis of what we stand for.

The main focus of our operation is the maternal power behind it. The small size of our herd allows us to personally know every animal on the ranch, allowing us to understand how they act when they calve and in the pasture. This knowledge goes back several generations, and our females become part of our family. They are the heart of our herd, and we treat them as such. The theory at Snowy Mountain Angus is- if we take care of our girls, they will take care of us- and so far, they’ve done just that. We cull very hard. Whether bulls or females, if they don’t check the boxes, they don’t stay or walk through the ring on sale day.

Our family works hard to put quality calves on the ground. Our bull calves are developed slowly and sold each spring in our production sale with Rockin’ L Genetics. We have been partnering with Rockin’ L Genetics for many years. While our herds are very different, we are able to use those differences to offer a great variety of bulls to our customers. While our cattle are larger framed and more accustomed to higher elevations, their cattle are smaller framed and excel in drier conditions and rougher terrain. Snowy Mountain Angus focuses on temperament and performance with a zero tolerance for cattle that do not meet our expectations.

The cows are there to do their job, which will allow us to do our job and in turn, help our customers do their job.
